The film was released in the United States on December 5, 2013. The film grossed $50 million worldwide against its budget of $28 million. Lone Survivor was #1 at the box office on opening weekend with $36.7 million, setting a record for the highest opening weekend gross of 2013 for a R-rated film, beating Limitless. As of February 2014 "Lone Survivor" has grossed over $100 million domestically and over $100 million worldwide.On March 25, 2014, Fox announced that they were considering adding the film to their slate of wide releases for 2014. In April 2014, they added it to the schedule as a wide release on January 10, 2015. In September 2013, Esquire Network announced a TV series based on the book and film is in the works. The show is being produced by Academy Award winning producer Sylvester Stallone and written/created by David Broyles ("Band of Brothers") who will write and produce with Tango Entertainment CEO Paul W.S. Anderson. The show does not yet have a network attached but Stallone hopes that it will air on one of the major networks or premium cable channels such as HBO, Showtime or Starz. The movie was received with mixed to positive reviews and it holds a 50% on Rotten Tomatoes based on 158 reviews with an average rating of 5/10. The site's critical consensus reads, "Lone Survivor is a decent, if unremarkable, tribute to its real-life subject matter and the Navy SEALs in general." On Metacritic, which assigns a normalized rating out of 100 based on reviews from critics, the film has a score of 49 based on 41 critics, indicating "mixed or average reviews". J. R. Jones of "Slant Magazine" gave the film 3 out of 5 stars, saying, "While the politics of the conflict are indescribably complex, this is an action-drama that adheres to Hollywood's tradition of all-American heroism. Like Saving Private Ryan or The Hurt Locker, Lone Survivor is a movie about men in uniform doing what they do best—fighting wars on behalf of their country." Chris Tilly II of RogerEbert.com gave the film 1/4 stars, saying that "Lone Survivor has more to say than "Courage Under Fire" did 15 years ago.
